According to the Washington Post, teenage deaths from car accidents increased in the first half of 2011. The statistics used by the newspaper came from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association and the increase seems to be attributable to more distracted driving, primarily from activities such as texting and using a cell phone.
Young drivers are generally considered to be more dangerous simply because they lack experience. Unfortunately, it seems that texting and driving increase the car accident rate for the young driver.
There have not been a lot of studies on the effect of texting and driving, but many states either have legislation outlawing texting and driving or such legislation is being considered. Virginia does not permit teenage drivers to text and drive. The article noted that teens were more likely to be involved in a fatal car accident at night by a factor of two to one.
